Site Characterization Dose Modeling & MARSSIM

Dade Moeller has supported efforts to remediate contamination at major U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) facilities, as well as many other public and commercial sites using methods consistent with the guidance provided in the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM). We have successfully applied the RESRAD family of computer codes and other pathway analysis methods to assess public doses for a variety of situations. We have successfully applied our expertise to a wide range of facilities, including nuclear reactors, fuel handling operations, laboratories, and other sites that have been contaminated with radioactive and toxic substances. We have:

  • Prepared MARSSIM site radiological characterization plans;
  • Performed modeling assessments using the RESRAD computer software to develop site-specific Derived Concentration Guideline Levels (DCGLS) and set cleanup goals consistent with the MARSSIM guidance;
  • Independently derived the soil cleanup DCGLs for site remediation considering scenarios approved by the regulatory agencies;
  • Reviewed historical site assessments, determined the classification of the impacted areas, and provided commentary on the adequacy of the DCGLs and survey plans;
  • Independently run the RESRAD computer model to verify the results provided by the decommissioning contractors; and
  • Performed radiological characterization, remediation planning, construction oversight, and post remediation surveys to support decontamination of a radioactive materials laboratory based on MARSSIM guidance.

Dade Moeller is assisting our clients in following the MARSSIM process for decontamination and decommissioning. We have experience in all phases of the MARSSIM process, from planning (evaluation of historical site assessments, establishing DCGLs, and establishing data quality objectives), to implementation (including data collection and quality assurance/quality control activities), to assessment (data validation and data quality assessment), and finally to decision-making. By following the MARSSIM guidance and process, we can help our clients plan and execute successful remediation programs and achieve the maximum credibility with regulators and stakeholders.
